The same roll of film can give two very different results. Fitted correctly, a UV-stabilised greenhouse film reaches its full service life; fitted badly, it tears at the channel in the first winter or drips on the crop from day one. This guide covers what our export team walks buyers through before every container ships.
Ten minutes of frame work saves a re-cover. Run a gloved hand along every purlin, gutter edge and locking channel: any burr, weld spatter or rust blossom is a puncture waiting for the first wind load. Replace cracked locking channel, check that spring wire still has tension, and confirm pressure line or rope anchors are sound. Where an old film is being removed, clear the channel completely — leftover fragments prevent the new spring from seating.
Film should be unwrapped on a clean, dry surface and handled with the protective side up. Dragging a roll across gravel is the most common cause of invisible scuffs that later split under tension.

Condensation spreads into a thin sheet and runs down the wall to the gutter instead of forming droplets that fall on the canopy.
The weather side carries the ultraviolet package that protects the polymer through years of sun, rain and temperature swing.
Drips land on leaves and fruit, disease pressure rises, and the UV package sits on the wrong side of the sheet — service life drops sharply.
If you are unsure which face is which, mark it on the roll before lifting, and re-check after the sheet is over the frame — a film that has been turned end-for-end during handling is easy to miss.
Tension is not a single pull. Film responds to temperature: it slackens in heat and tightens in cold. The practical approach is to tension in stages — lay the sheet, anchor one gable, pull the sheet over, anchor the second gable, then tension the sides — and to finish on a mild, overcast day rather than in strong midday sun.

Seat the spring wire fully into the locking channel — a wire that is “half in” will walk out under wind load. Work from the centre of each run toward the ends, and keep the channel clean as you go. On the roof, add pressure line or rope over the crown at regular intervals so the sheet is held down between purlins rather than only at the edges. Give the windward gable and the corners extra fixings: that is where lift starts.
Finish doors, vents and overlaps with the same discipline — folded and clipped edges, no open flap facing into prevailing wind.

Small damage is worth fixing immediately. A dedicated repair tape or patch kit costs almost nothing compared with a tear that runs the length of a span.

Film is supplied to your frame: tell us span width, gutter height, and whether you need anti-drip, diffused light or a specific thermal package. Standard thickness range is 100–200 mic, widths up to 16 m, with 90% light transmission on clear grades. PO film is specified where a 3–5 year service life is required; PE grades are the lower-cost option where a shorter cycle is planned. Yes for tunnel and small multi-span structures, with three to four people and calm weather. Large spans or exposed sites are worth doing with an experienced crew.
Ask for the marking on the roll before installation. On the sheet itself, the anti-drip face wets evenly into a film of water rather than beading.
Drum-tight with no flapping in light wind, but not shiny or whitened at the locking channel — that indicates the sheet is being thinned.
At least once a year, before the low-light season. Dust and residue are the most overlooked cause of reduced transmission.
Most commercial structures land between 100 and 200 mic. Choose by wind and snow load and by the service life you plan for, not by price per roll alone.
Small punctures and short tears, yes — with film repair tape or a patch. Long splits, brittle areas and repeated damage mean replacement.
