Choosing the right plastic film for your business is rarely as simple as picking the cheapest roll on the quote sheet. Global buyers — greenhouse operators in Southeast Asia, construction contractors in Africa, packaging distributors in South America — repeatedly tell us the same story: the film arrived, but it tore too early, yellowed under the sun within one season, or simply did not match the agreed specification. This guide distils the practical experience of a manufacturer operating since 1994 into a five-factor framework you can use to evaluate any plastic film supplier before you commit a full container load.

The Problem
Most film failures are predictable. They show up in five recurring patterns we see across import markets:
Wrong thickness selection.
A film specified in “mm” by the buyer and produced in “mil” by the factory can be 25× off in reality. Thickness mismatch is the single most common cause of premature failure.
Poor UV performance.
Without a proper UV stabilisation package, agricultural film chalks and loses tensile strength within months under intense sun — especially in equatorial and high-altitude regions.
Inconsistent quality between batches.
Buyers report that roll #1 performs well, but roll #40 from the same order cracks differently. This points to weak in-house quality control, not a bad material.
Unreliable suppliers.
Middlemen with no factory, no lab, and no export license disappear when a claim arises. You cannot audit a warehouse you have never seen.
High import risks.
Missing certificates (REACH, TÜV, ISO), vague Incoterms, and no pre-shipment inspection turn a routine purchase into a customs and financial gamble.
Evaluation Framework
Before requesting a quote, score every candidate film against these five factors. A supplier who cannot answer all five clearly is a supplier to avoid.
The base polymer decides everything else. Polyethene (PE) films are economical and widely used for greenhouse and mulch applications, typically offering 1–2 seasons of service life. Polyolefin (PO) films — see our PO greenhouse film — deliver higher light transmission (90–92%), built-in anti-drip that lasts the film’s life, and 3–5 year durability at a higher price point. For industrial and packaging uses, blends with EVA or metallocene catalysts tune flexibility and puncture resistance. Match the polymer to the job, not the budget alone.
Always specify thickness in microns (µm) to avoid unit confusion. Typical ranges: agricultural greenhouse film 80–250 µm (most tunnels use 150–200 µm); mulch film 10–50 µm (15–25 µm for hand laying); construction and building protection film 100–300 µm; stretch packaging film 17–35 µm. Thicker is not automatically better — over-specifying wastes money and reduces light transmission in greenhouses.
A film that performs perfectly as a pallet cover will fail as greenhouse cladding. Define the exact use — crop type, local climate, required light spectrum, chemical exposure — before comparing products. Application drive, not the catalogue, should determine the spec.
Demand specifics on the functional additives: UV resistance (HALS stabilizer package and rated lifespan), anti-drip / anti-fog (condensation control), light diffusion (scatters direct sun to reduce leaf scorch), and thermal (IR) retention for night warmth. Each function adds cost but directly extends crop yield or film life.
Can the factory extrude multi-layer co-extruded film, run an in-house lab, and hold documented certifications? A capable manufacturer publishes its production process and welcomes a factory audit. This is where unreliable suppliers are separated from partners.
Evidence
Ask for the extrusion line layout. Modern agricultural film is produced on multi-layer co-extrusion lines (3-layer and 5-layer) where each layer carries a different function — UV stabilizer outside, anti-drip inside, strength core in between. A single-layer blown film cannot deliver the same lifespan. Photos or video of the actual line beat a brochure.
Look for ISO 9001 certification and, for European-bound goods, REACH and TÜV documentation. More important than the certificate on the wall is the process: are thickness, haze, and tensile strength checked per batch or per week? Per-batch testing is the mark of a serious plastic film manufacturer.
A credible supplier reports measurable data: tensile strength and elongation at break (ASTM D882), haze and light transmission (ASTM D1003), and accelerated UV weathering results. Request a sample test report — if the numbers are missing or vague, that is your answer.

Lifespan shortens under extreme UV, high temperature, and chemical exposure — which is why the UV rating, not just the thickness, matters most.
Request tensile strength and elongation at break (ASTM D882), light transmission and haze (ASTM D1003), and accelerated weathering data. For food-adjacent or European applications, ask for REACH and TÜV compliance certificates. Reputable suppliers attach a per-batch test report to the shipment — not just a generic company certificate.
