Underground warning tape — also called buried marker tape, underground detectable tape or utility warning tape — is a brightly colored, highly visible plastic tape laid in the ground directly above buried utilities. Its purpose is simple: when an excavator digs and hits the tape before hitting the pipe or cable, the color and printed message warn them to stop and locate the utility below.
Unlike surface barricade tape, underground warning tape is designed to be buried. It must resist soil chemicals, moisture and ground movement for years without fading or disintegrating.
Utility strike costs are staggering: a single fiber optic cable cut can disrupt thousands of connections and cost tens of thousands in repairs and penalties. Gas line strikes cause explosions. Water main breaks flood streets. Underground warning tape is the last line of defense — and it costs a fraction of a single repair.
There are two fundamental categories of underground warning tape, and the choice depends on local regulations and the type of utility being protected.

Detectable underground warning tape contains a thin layer of aluminum foil or one or more stainless steel wires embedded in the PE film. When a utility locator (also called a cable avoidance tool or CAT) sends an electromagnetic signal through the ground, the conductive layer reflects that signal, allowing the operator to pinpoint the exact horizontal location and depth of the buried utility — before digging begins.
Underground warning tape follows a standardized color code so that any worker, anywhere in the world, can identify the utility type at a glance. The American Public Works Association (APWA) uniform color code is the most widely adopted standard globally.

While the APWA code dominates North America and much of the world, some regions use variations. In parts of Europe, yellow may indicate both gas and electric. In Australia, orange is sometimes used for water. Always verify local regulations before specifying tape color for a project.

Underground warning tape should be laid 200–300 mm (8–12 inches) above the utility, not directly on it. This gives the excavator enough warning depth to stop before reaching the pipe or cable. If the tape is too close to the utility, the excavator may strike both simultaneously.
For critical utilities, supplement underground tape with above-ground marker posts or surface markers at regular intervals, especially at bends, junctions and service connections.
Red detectable tape is standard for buried electric cables and conduits. High-voltage lines (above 1 kV) almost always require detectable tape. The foil layer allows utility locators to trace the cable path without energizing it.
Yellow detectable tape is mandatory in most jurisdictions for buried gas lines. Gas strikes are the most dangerous — even a small nick can cause a leak that leads to explosion. Detectable tape allows precise location before any excavation.
Blue (potable water) and green (sewer) tape. Non-detectable tape is often accepted for water and sewer, but detectable tape is increasingly specified for water mains in urban areas where excavation is frequent.
Orange detectable tape for fiber optic and communication cables. Fiber optic cables are non-metallic and cannot be located by standard metal detectors — the detectable foil in the warning tape becomes the only way to locate them electronically.

Requirements vary by country and jurisdiction. In the US, many states and municipalities require detectable warning tape for gas and electric lines. In the EU, national regulations often specify requirements. Always check local building codes and utility company standards.
Only detectable tape (with aluminum foil or metal wire) can be located by electromagnetic utility locators. Standard non-detectable PE tape is invisible to metal detectors.
Quality PE underground warning tape can last 20–50 years in typical soil conditions, depending on thickness, soil chemistry, and moisture levels. UV-stabilized, chemical-resistant formulations offer the longest lifespan.
